A Deferred Dream

[written in Baltimore, MD, while teaching English in a Baltimore City Public high school]

I taught “A Dream Deferred” yesterday, which included a rich class discussion about dreams. I commented that I have dreams that I said “sag/like a heavy load,” and almost didn’t answer the kid who inquired as to what those dreams were.

And now today I’m still haunted by a follow-up question I pretended not to hear from another boy:

“Ms. Graham, why AREN’T you a writer?”
