Frederick Douglass and Co.

Today’s “Kid(s), You Secretly Made My Day” occurred during the impassioned lesson I wrote about Frederick Douglass and the struggle so many black Americans went through to learn to read and write.

Boy #1, sincerely: “If we was living back then, would you have helped us?”
Me, loudly: “What! It’s ME! Of COURSE I would have helped you.”
<Boy #1 smiles and starts to respond>
Boy #2, interjecting and by way of explanation: “Yooo, Ms. Graham’s BLACK!”
<class laughs>
Boy #3: “If they would have tried to hurt you for helping us, I’d have stopped them.”
<aaaand now it’s Ms. Graham’s turn to smile>
